Robert Spano, the distinguished music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, makes his TSO début with this immensely colourful programme. Violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg brings her uniquely infectious exuberance to tango legend Astor Piazzolla’s spicy South American evocations of the four seasons. Stravinsky’s kaleidoscopic dance score, Petrouchka, tells a haunting tale of love and betrayal, set in the bustling world of a Russian fairground. Read more

Enter OCAD presents the thesis work of the class of 2010, an eclectic mix of more than 500 graduating students working in twelve undergraduate programs ranging from drawing and painting, printmaking, photography, criticism and curatorial practice, integrated media and sculpture/installation in the Faculty of Art, to advertising, environmental, industrial and graphic design, illustration and material art and design (jewellery, fibre and ceramics) in the university’s Faculty of Design. The centrepiece of former TSO music director Sir Andrew Davis’s programme is the warm-hearted Symphony No. 1 by Britain’s greatest composer, Sir Edward Elgar. Elgar declared that it embodied “great charity (love) and a massive hope in the future.” Violinist Stefan Jackiw, whom the Baltimore Sun praised as an artist who “…plays with the incisiveness and exquisite taste of an Old World, long-seasoned fiddler” makes his TSO début with a sweet, lyrical Mozart concerto. Peter Oundjian continues his exploration of the Mahler Symphonies, leading the rarely heard but deeply intriguing No. 7. It ranges through heroic marches and nocturnal serenades to a darting, spidery scherzo and a triumphant finale. The celebrated pianist Anton Kuerti adds to the enjoyment with a sparkling concerto by Mendelssohn. Read more
