Soak up the sun and fun at Ontario Place

Ontario Place Toronto

Soak up the sun and fun at Toronto’s very own amusement park.  Ontario Place opens on Saturday, May 22 with a bang (literally) with fireworks to celebrate the Victoria Day long weekend and the opening of the 2010 season.  At Ontario Place, you can find a waterpark, rides, a gorgeous boardwalk, Cinesphere (IMAX Theatre) and romantic pedal boat rides.

Ontario Place was built as a showcase for the Province of Ontario that would replace the Government of Ontario building at the CNE and take advantage of what was then an under-developed waterfront area.

Construction started on March 17, 1969 and took an estimated 1.5 million person hours of labour to build at a cost of $29M.

The original park was consisted of three man-made islands connected by picturesque bridges and walkways with the Pods or Pavilion, complex and the geodesic dome of the Cinesphere as the focal points.

The park initially encompassed 96 acres of which 51 acres were land fill.

The gate first opened to the public on May 22, 1971, 38 years ago.

One of the great things about Ontario Place is that they have a reciprocal relationship with The Ex, where after paying admission at Ontario Place you can gain free entry to The Ex which is next door during the time they’re open.

Some of things you can look out are the upcoming Festival of Fire in July and the Pizza Pizza Weekend (May 29/30) where you can get a Play All Day Pass Coupon for only $10, announced via Ontario Place’s tweet, their $20 Tuesday promotion.

If you’re going any other day, you can save $5 for an All Day Play Pass.
