Second City for Mayor Review

The Second City Toronto released their latest show, “Second City for Mayor”, which opened to much praise from local critics and show-goers alike. With a new stage, it also marks a new beginning after a slump from their previous show, “Shut Up and Show Us Your Tweets!”. This time around, they are back with a vengeance, hungry to redeem themselves with a production that brings them back to the forefront of the comedy scene in Toronto, where they rightfully belong.
Their scenes, as part of their tradition, were laced with political satire, poking fun at the upcoming Toronto mayoral election, as well as weaving current pop culture trends into the production.
Newcomer, Kris Siddiqui, had some big shoes to fill with Toronto mainstage favourite Darryl Hinds’ departure. Making the jump from the The Second City Touring Company and into the spotlight on their mainstage, Siddiqui performed like a seasoned veteran. His debut scene involved a role reversal in the world of taxi cabs, with him playing the cheeky “Pakistani”, poking fun at a cab driver with Irish roots played by Rob Baker.
Another memorable scene involved pure feats of improv with a spectacular and rowdy performance by Rob Baker. His knack for inciting audience participation was executed flawlessly, as he played a tough talkin’ but not so straight shootin’ mayoral candidate.
One of my favourite acts involved Reid Janisse, whose musical improv scene was both dazzling and genius. With random audience suggestions being flung his way, he skillfully crafted improvised songs off the top of his head, leaving the audience squealing with laughter and delight.
As an improv and sketch comedy enthusiast, I’ve seen the last 6 consecutive shows– some I’ve even watched twice. I’ve heartily recommended The Second City Toronto to friends, turning the unaware into Second City comedy coverts. You will see what I mean when you check out “Second City for Mayor” and why we’re giving the show a 4/4 rating.
