It’s back to school! For some who are headed back or just starting College or University, there’s a sense of excitement of how the school year will unravel in terms of the adventures, fun times and memories that will be the result of a school year lived to its fullest.
For the majority of us, however, it’s another chance to make this year better than before to not only kick ass in school, but also lead a fulfilling social life filled as well. How we get to the point of finding that balance between being strong academically and socially often causes a lot of confusion and guesswork. By the time you start “getting it”, you’re already deep into your post-secondary career, in the last few months of your college or university career (unless you’re doing grad school), or you just don’t “get it” at all…
Conquer Your Campus (CYC) is a dating and social dynamics e-book for guys who are in College/University who want to get their social lives handled and become what they call a “20% Man”. CYC was written by a guy under the pseudonym of “Mark Redman” who was once your everyday timid freshman yearning to be a part of the “in-crowd” and through the mentorship of Christian Hudson (founder of The Social Man and helped co-found Charisma Arts ), careful study, and going out, he rose to the top the college social scene during his last few years at NYU.
While I was reading the book, it was as if a light bulb was constantly flashing in my head every few minutes while I was nodding my head and relating it back to my University days and when I was trying to run “game” inspired by the book, “The Game” that’s considered mainstream and increasingly becoming irrelevant nowadays.
“The Game” vs College Game
Mark’s opinion on running any “game” doing cold approaches through the popular methods of socializing featured in the now mainstream book, The Game, is pretty weird in the College scene. In the Tribal-like world of College and University that’s dominated by only a few distinct cliques and groups who are the “In Crowd”, doing cold approaches (while they do work) isn’t how it’s done naturally in College and University. Meeting new friends and hookups are done through your social circle and connecting with other social circles. That’s the bedrock of your “game” – and the same way how the “popular kids” do it.
The point of the book is not to be “gamey”, but to teach you to naturally rise to the top of social scene, be that fun and social guy that is the bridge for different social worlds and as they hammer home the point, “give love”.
There are so many insights and nuggets of gold that they go into in terms of dating, setting up dates, bar games that you can play, leveraging Facebook/MySpace. Even if you’re not in College or University.
The thing is about this e-book is that it’s applicable to outside of the College and University Scene as well. Of course you need to figure out the nuances of whatever scene you’re in, but as long as you’re looking at the big picture, you can easily adapt to whichever scene you may be in.
What they stress in being a 20% Man are the four traits:
• Having Fun
• Dominant
• Leader
• Taking it easy
What I simply love about this book is how much importance they stress the taking on the Mindset of what a 20% Man is and having fun. When the mindset ingrained as a part of yourself. Everything comes naturally and effortlessly when you take the time to adopt the mindset and make it a part of yourself.
Sure, running scripts and routines can work, they are inferior because they are only scripts that present yourself in a way that’s incongruent and not aligned with your natural personality.
I’ll say time and time again that working on your exterior will only get you so far in terms of a few minutes of conversation. Being a “dancing monkey” to entertain people is not the focus of the book. The focus of the book is to save you time and get the years of trial and error and distilled knowledge into your head so you don’t make the same mistakes over and over again.
Constructive Criticisms:
Writing from the Canadian perspective, CYC deals with a situation that’s very focused on the US College scene. So if you’re reading this as a Canadian or anywhere else in the world for that matter, where the Greek system of fraternities and sororities aren’t as heavily emphasized as a part of life in College or University, there is that disconnect in being able to relate to what they’re writing about. However, there are still tons of other examples and how to meet cool new friends that add value to your life just as much you are adding to theirs.
There’s “minimalist look” they adopt, it lacks the professional feel that I’m normally used to – but for others it may not matter. Their reason is that this ebook was meant to be printed off, so you can take notes along the margins and mark it up whichever way you want, so you can refer back to it. Besides being a little nitpicky there, it doesn’t change the fact that this book is still a solid read and chalk full of so many insights.
Concluding thoughts:
What Mark writes about are focusing on the fundamentals on what it takes to be a “20% Man” in the College and University scene and what distinguishes those who are at the top of social scene.
The beauty about Conquer Your Campus is that what’s taught in the book not only applies to the College and University scene, a lot of it equally applies to the world outside of school as well. I’d like to think of school as a launching pad into life – you’re meeting people from all different backgrounds, of all stripes and colours.
When you strip away from the vulgarity of Mark (even though I think it’s pretty funny), we all want to find meaning, love and knowing our priorities and purpose in life – that’s what Conquer Your Campus exactly is about.
It weighs in at only 138 pages, so it’s something you shouldn’t put off since it’s the beginning of the school year, when meeting new people and making new connections is natural and doesn’t feel forced. Don’t put off your school reading as well, because that’s equally important
YOU WILL get results if you apply what’s being explained in the book. By acting on this sooner rather than later, you’re laying the foundation for great times and memories where you’ll reflect on smile on being one of the few who had a truly amazing time in College and University.
Buying the e-book also lets you into their “Inner Circle Access” which is a forum where you can share your progress. They give you a 60-day “test drive” if you don’t like the material, you can get your money back – no questions asked.
